Dear Friends and Family,
Danika and I spoke with Heavenly and in light of the overwhelming uncertainty surrounding our event, we have made the decision to cancel the wedding.
Thank you all for your patience and support.
Dear Friends and Family,
I wanted to share a brief update on our wedding plans in light of the tragic and unprecedented wildfire situation approaching South Lake Tahoe.
As of today, the wedding is still on. Heavenly has indeed closed their resort for the rest of the summer season, but this does not apply to events.
However, as Heavenly is on federal land, they are obligated to follow all mandates issued by the US Forest Service. Heavenly has been forced to cancel weddings through September 6th, but plans to resume them on September 10th. This means that Heavenly may be forced to cancel future events with minimal notice if deemed necessary by the US Forest Service.
Rain, smoke, snow or shine, Danika and I are planning to have the wedding on September 26th unless the event is canceled by Havenly. If Heavenly cancels our event – whether under orders from the US Forest Service, evacuation orders from local government, or county or state health officials – we will not reschedule it to a later date but simply cancel it.
Wildfires and air quality change quickly; while there is poor air quality today, the Caldor Fire is expected to be contained in the next week, and while the Sierras are dry this time of year, the temperatures drop into the low 40s / upper 30s at night, which means that fires in the upper Sierras do not spread as quickly or as unpredictably as fires elsewhere in California or on the west coast.
Please help Danika and I by:
Please do not book airbnbs or VRBOs as these platforms will not issue refunds for anything short of an evacuation order. This means that if Heavenly cancels the event under orders from the US Forest Service, you may not be able to get a refund as US Forest Service orders do not apply to municipal Tahoe.
If you use our group discount code, bookings are refundable up until 48 hours before the start of your booking.
Thank you
Danika & Joe

South Lake Tahoe is, unfortunately, no longer welcoming of airbnb and vacation rentals. The best recommendation is to use group discount code SHVKLW21 and book a resort property at Heavenly. [Direct link w/ discount applied]

March-ish 2018
Like many couples in San Francisco, Danika and Joe first matched on a dating app, Bumble. After Stripe (Danika’s employer) announced they were acquiring a company called Index (Joe’s employer) on March 5, 2018, Danika realized she would be working with Joe and then promptly unmatched him on Bumble, due to her “I don’t date coworkers” policy.
They first met face-to-face during Joe’s New Hire Onboarding. The topic of their first conversation was on the definition of ‘Payment Facilitators’. Inspired by Joe’s insightful comments, and regretting her decision to unmatch him, Danika asked Joe out for coffee. Impressed by Danika’s creative interpretation of the regulatory framework on payment facilitators, Joe accepted Danika’s offer and they planned to grab coffee @ Philz on March 28. There happened to be a massive downpour that day, so the coffee date was moved to a discreet conference room in a far-flung corner of their office named ‘Bearded Dragon’. A :45min coffee lasted 2 hours, and the rest is history!

Joe decided the most appropriate way to test their compatibility would be a long road trip to the far northern tip of California, to a tiny coastal town, Eureka. On the way, Danika revealed her love of redwood trees as they drove through Avenue of the Giants. Much oyster eating and hiking ensued over the weekend. On the way back, Danika further impressed Joe by showing off her bowling prowess and beating Joe. Everything seemed to be going well!
June 9th, 2018
Danika met Joe’s parents, Joe & Debbie, and his niece, Maddison, when they came to visit San Francisco in early June. Everyone had a great time, especially Maddison, who compiled video for the entire weekend!

Danika and Joe felt that a puppy would provide practice with surviving sleepless nights, knowing what was to come in June 2019.
After weeks of searching for just the right fur-baby, they adopted Zeus, who was being fostered in Santa Monica, California. They drove down to Santa Monica to bring Zeus home. Very quickly Zeus brought so much joy to their lives!

Coincidentally, and fortunately, both Danika’s and Joe’s family live in the North Dallas area. This made the holidays an ideal time to get engaged. On the second day of a two week Dallas visit, and in the presence of her sisters, Joe surprised Danika with an engagement ring over dinner. After a brief moment of shock and confusion, she quickly said “Yes!”

Joe met Judd when they became roommates in early 2008. While Judd has continued to make questionable hairstyle decisions over the years, they’ve remained great friends.
